Hard drives may be capable of holding huge amounts of information, but most of them are quite limited when it comes to speed. If you have enough RAM to spare, an effective solution is to use some of it as a disk drive and Ramdisk makes this possible. The procedure is not complicated at all and when it is done, you will be able to use part of your RAM to store files, just like on a standard disk partition. In this way, Internet loading times, file transfers and other tasks will go much faster.

You will not encounter any difficult options during the setup process. It goes fast and smooth, without requiring additional tools, services or a reboot. Ramdisk is compatible with all Windows versions, from XP to Windows 8, as well as all Server editions.

The interface does not present too many options and it takes up only a small portion of the screen. You will have to work on separate tabs, to configure the software's behavior, access an event log, select a few options to save and load a virtual image of the new partition and of course, set up the partition itself.

Ramdisk lets you create a FAT16, FAT32 of an unformatted partition. Its size can range from a few MB to 4 GB (in the freeware version) or even more, depending on how much RAM you have. Additionally, you may choose to create a Windows or DOS boot sector. When you are satisfied with your settings, you just need to click a button and the software will create a new disk partition, using your specified amount of RAM. The partition can be disabled at any time by clicking a different button, in the same area.

As previously suggested, Ramdisk can save your partition as a disk image (.img), but it can also load the image automatically, each time you start your computer. This makes it possible to use RAM as a disk partition at all times, without losing its contained data, even if you restart your computer. You just need to save the disk image from time to time or set the application to save it automatically, at regular time intervals.

Pros

You can use over two thirds of your RAM as a standard disk partition. Setting up a new partition is done very easily. The best part is that Ramdisk can save it as a virtual image and load it automatically during the system's startup.

Cons

The software lets you create only FAT and unformatted partitions. Thanks to Ramdisk's advanced features, you can use as much RAM as you can spare, to create a fast and stable disk partition.
